What is Deodorant?

Deodorant is a substance that is applied to the body (most often the armpits and feet). It is used to help counteract smells that are produced through sweating. Every person suffers from some degree of sweating which causes bacteria and body odor. Deodorant comes in many different fragrances and formulations. You may come across antiperspirant while you are shopping for deodorant, but keep in mind that they are not the same thing. Antiperspirants interact with the sweat glands under your arms and prevent them from sweating, whereas deodorant covers up the odor caused by sweat.

How to Choose Deodorant

When shopping for deodorant it can be overwhelming because there are so many different options available. Some of the most common types of deodorant include:

  • Gel deodorants are slick and transparent. They glide on the skin very easily and dry after a couple minutes. You will want to wait before dressing after applying a gel deodorant because they can easily transfer onto your clothing. Gel deodorants are a great option that won’t leave chalky white marks on your clothing.

  • Deodorant sticks are the most common formula on the market. They have a solid texture that goes on like a cream. You may have to try out a few stick deodorant formulas to find the right scent and texture. Be careful when applying deodorant sticks because they can leave chalky residue on your dark clothing or can leave yellow stains on your light clothing.

  • Spray deodorant comes in a can. It is most often used by men as it is a good formula for those with armpit hair. It can cause skin irritation for those who shave or wax their armpits because they are alcohol based. Spray deodorants do not require very much product to be applied because they very fragrant and effective.

It may take trial and error to find the best deodorant for your needs. You may need to use a different formula depending on the weather or the activity that you are doing. You should be careful when trying out new formulas, especially if you have skin sensitivities. If you notice bumps, redness, itching or skin peeling you should discontinue using your current deodorant immediately. You should also be aware of scented deodorants because of scent-free environments, sensitives and allergies. Deodorants are available in scent-free formulations as well. Having a few deodorants around can keep you prepared no matter what. Consider having a deodorant available in your gym bag and car for easy access.

Deodorant is a great self-care basic that can keep you protected from body odor. You can find deodorant at your local pharmacy or retail store under $10.
